As fun and fascinating as gourd art is, there are a few safety precautions you should observe as you prepare and work with your gourds.
- As gourds dry, they very often develop mold spots on the outside surface. This is normal, but you should not bring the gourds inside your home until you have washed them. In this way, you will not contaminate your home with mold.
- When washing gourds, you should wear a mask to cover your nose and mouth to keep from breathing in mold spores. See information on washing gourds here.
- When cutting and sanding gourds, you should always wear a mask to cover your nose and mouth to keep from breathing in excess dust.
- Always wear eye protection when using electric tools to cut your gourds to avoid eye injury.
